Unas
700 personas siguieron el beat que Christopher Lawrence impuso en el
Club Bash, de San José, durante su presentación el pasado 13 de
setiembre de 2002. Para muchos una buena oportunidad, escucharon a uno de los
mejores 10 djs del mundo. Para él todo fue sorpresa, acaba de terminar
su set y está impresionado por un público del que no sabía que
esperar. Un público que construyó junto al DJ la energía de la noche,
cuando todo lo demás es solo el lustre del pastel...
Ahora
que acabás de terminar tu primer toque en Costa Rica, que opinás del público
costarricense?
Quedé anonadado! La gente es realmente asombrosa, todos tan amigables,
una gran vibra y claro... todos
vinieron a lo que vinieron esta noche, asi que estoy muy feliz de haber
mezclado acá.
Que habías
escuchado sobre la escena electrónica en Centro América?
Nunca escuché nada al respecto, aunque tengo un par de amigos que habían
venido antes, pero no los
he visto desde que volvieron así que no tenia ni idea!
No sabia que esperar pero creo que todo aquí es tan bueno como
en el resto del mundo. Quedé realmente impresionado.
Fuiste nombrado
“Superstar DJ” por Mixer Magazine este año...
qué significa eso para vos?
Ahm... significa que puedo cobrar más!
No no (riendo). En serio es
bueno ser reconocido pero, al final todo está en la fiesta, ya sabés,
la
fiesta es lo único que realmente importa y yo solo trato de dar lo
mejor de mi en cada evento en que mezclo.
También
este año, ganaste como "DJ del año"... pensás que
estos reconocimientos son importantes para un DJ?
Lo importante es como te desenvolvás en cada presentación. Los premios
que uno gana son solo el lustre del pastel, es grandioso ser reconocido
por otros miembros la industria de la música
electrónica y por mis fans pero, a fin de cuentas lo que más interesa
es la respuesta que tenga de la gente en el dancefloor, es ahí donde
esta mi corazón, en el dancefloor y con la gente cada noche.
Cuales pensás que
son los elementos necesarios para una gran noche?
Primero lo mas importante es la gente, la gente es la que hace la
fiesta. Segundo es un buen
DJ, sin embargo frente a un buen público, cualquiera es un buen DJ.
Qué opinás sobre
la situación en los Estados Unidos con respecto a las nuevas
modificaciones en las leyes de regulación de drogas y clubes?
Ah es verdaderamente malo, es solo el gobierno americano. Simplemente no
tienen nada mas que hacer, además de haber perdido el control de drogas
como cocaína, crack, heroína, ahora van tras los jóvenes. El éxtasis
no es el verdadero problema en los Estados Unidos pero, lo están
convirtiendo en uno y están
persiguiendo los raves solo por ser una forma nueva de música y por que
no hay un movimiento verdaderamente fuerte que los defienda.
Que tan malo es esto
para un DJ como vos?
Ha
sido bastante malo. Por ejemplo hubo muchos eventos que normalmente son
festivales de unas 30000 personas, que fueron "supendidos"
inclusive antes de que empezaran. Es también bastante malo para la
escena ya que a la gente le da miedo salir de nuevo, por lo que el
evento pude que no se realice mas en adelante.
Sin
embargo, en respuesta a eso, la gente ahora va más a clubs
por lo que la escena del clubbing se ha vuelto verdaderamente grande.
Pasó algo similar en Europa e Inglaterra donde todos los festivales y
eventos al aire libre se trasladaron a los clubes y eso es lo que esta
pasando en América. No se cómo es acá, qué es mas popular eventos al
aire libre o clubing?
urbanistmo: Hay de
todo, pero nuestra escena no es tan grande
acá, está creciendo...
En serio! yo pensé
que era bastante grade! Vine
esta noche y
donde vi esto pensé:
“Dios
Costa rica Rocks!”

You
have just finish your first play here on Costa Rica what’s your first
impression on the Costarican crowd?
Lawrence: I was blown away! Really
awesome crowd, every body was so friendly, grate vibe, and hum... Yeah!
every body was well up for it tonight so, I´m really happy to play
here.
Have you ever heard
about the electronic scene here in Central America?
Lawrence: I've never heard anything about it. I had a couple of friends
that came down here but, I haven´t talk to them since they been here so
I have no idea! I
didn´t know what to expect but is as good as any place in the world. I
was really impressed.
Mixer magazine
recently called you “superstar DJ”… what this means
for you?
Lawrence: Means I can charge more!
No! I don't (laugh). Is nice to be
recognize but, at the end of the day is all about the music, you know,
the night is the only thing that maters and I just try to do my best
each event that I play.
And this year, you
also won the “DJ of the Year” DacenStar Award… do you think these
awards are such important things for a DJ?
Lawrence: Like I said before what is important is how you perform on any
given night. The awards that one gets are the insing in the cake,
is great to be recognize by other members of the electronic music
industry and by my fans but, at the end of the day for me what maters
most is the response that I get on the dance floor. So that's were my
heart is, on the dance floor and with the people each night.
What do you think
are the necessary elements for a great night?
Lawrence: Most important
thing is a good crowd, the people is who make the party. Second, is a
good DJ, cause with a good crowd you can make any DJ look good.
What do you think
about all these situation in the States regarding the
new drugs and clubs regulations?
Lawrence: Ah is really bad, is just the US government they need
something to do and they lost their board on drugs, cocaine, crack,
heroin and now they just going after kids. Extacy really isn't a problem
in the States but, they're making it into one, and they´re targeting
raves because is a new form of music and there's nobody really to defend
them.
As a DJ how bad is
this situation for you?
Lawrence: It´s been pretty bad, actually a lot of events over the
summer that normally will be huge festivals with 30000 people, they were
getting shut down before they even started. Which is really bad for the
scene because make people afraid to go out again, that event might not
happened it kind of destroy the one of music events. However, in
response to that, people are now going to clubs more so the club scene
has become really big; Is similar with what happened in Europe and
England but all festivals and events move into the clubs and that's what
happened in America. I don't know what is like here,
what is it more popular here rave's or clubs?
urbanistmo: well, we
don't have these big festivals down here
jet our scene is not so big, and we don´t have a big clubbing scene
either…
Lawrence: Oh Really! I
tough is was big! I came
here tonight and though “God Costa Rica Rocks”
